Course/Module description:
From Morocco to Iraq, all Arab Middle Eastern countries have been significantly shaped by imperial forces. In this course, we will learn about the takeover of European empires over the Middle East and the culture apparatuses that enabled and justified colonial conquests. The course will focus on a few case studies and will highlight the characteristics common and unique to each colonial regime. We will also discuss the different ways in which indigenous populations opposed colonial regimes and how this struggle bolstered or deteriorated their social cohesion and the stature of their leadership. We will also look at the colonial heritage of the nation-states established following the withdrawal of European empires and delve into the questions posed by "post-colonial" critique. Finally, we will cautiously ask whether Zionism can be classified as a colonialist movement.
Course/Module aims:
1. Proficiency in the key narratives of the European takeover of the Arab Middle East, and Arab liberation from colonialism.
2. Familiarity with the central features of modern European colonialism.
3. Exploring some of the sophisticated colonial control mechanisms.
4. Identifying the colonial heritage in today’s Middle East.
