תאור כללי של הקורס:
ממרוקו ועד עיראק, אין ארץ במזרח התיכון הערבי שלא עוצבה באופן מהותי על ידי כוחות אימפריאליים. בקורס זה נלמד את קורות ההשתלטות של האימפריות האירופיות על המזרח התיכון ועל התרבות המודרנית אשר אפשרה והצדיקה כיבושים קולוניאליים. במהלך הקורס נתמקד בכמה מקרי בוחן, ונעמוד על מאפייני המשטר הקולוניאלי המשותפים והייחודיים לכל מקרה. כמו כן, נדון באופנים השונים בהם אוכלוסיות ילידיות התנגדו למשטר הקולוניאלי וכיצד באו לידי ביטוי במאבק זה מידת לכידותן ההיסטורית וחוזק הנהגתן. נבחן גם את המורשת הקולוניאלית במדינות הלאום שהוקמו בעקבות נסיגת האימפריות האירופאיות ונתעמק בסוגיה המחקרית אודות "פוסט קולוניאליזם". לבסוף, נשאל, בזהירות המתבקשת, האם ניתן לסווג את הציונות כתנועה קולוניאליסטית כפי שנעשה על ידי אויביה בעבר ובהווה.

מטרות הקורס:
1. בקיאות בכמה מהנרטיבים ההיסטוריים המרכזיים בתולדות ההשתלטות האירופאית על המזרח התיכון הערבי, וקורות התנועות לשחרור לאומי.
2. עמידה על המאפיינים המרכזיים של הקולוניאליזם האירופי המודרני.
3. היכרות עם כמה ממנגנוני השליטה המתחוכמים של המשטר הקולוניאלי.
4. זיהוי המורשת הקולניאלית במזרח התיכון של ימנו.
