Course/Module description:
The course is a survey of the visual culture in the Islamic lands from the 7th to the 13th century. It covers intellectual as well as material aspects, from urban planning to private palaces, from religious architecture to secular miniature painting.

Course/Module aims:
1.An encounter with the cultural and material facets of Medieval Islamic civilization.
2. Basic architectural knoweldge.
3.Analysis of the artistic language as a message carier.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1.To identify momumental archetecture, artifacts and paintings from Islamic lands according to their periods.
2. To analyse the artistic componants of the art works.
3. To read the message of the art in its historical context.

Attendance requirements(%):

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lecture accompanied by slides.

1. Art in the Near East on the eve of Islam.
2.The Dome of the Rock.
3.The early mosques.
4.Umayyad Palaces.
5.Abbasid Palaces.
6.Ummayyad Spain.
