Course/Module description:
The course focuses solely on real-life legal issues at school: Criminal and tort liability in negligence, defence of necessity, reporting duties on minor victims, privacy and surveillance in schools, tuition in public education and its affect on equality.

Course/Module aims:
Discussion about the duality of the Law's function in solving educational conflicts as well as in accelerating them. Demonstrating this phenomena on variety of policy issues.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Acknowledging legal aspect in everyday educational conflicts. Acquiring basic approach to legal analysis.

Attendance requirements(%):
80%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal + asynchronous pre-recorded lectures , accompanied by materials found in the course website.

Course/Module Content:
1. Criminal negligence in fatal accidents during school activities

2. Tort liability of teachers, respondent liability of LEAs and the state.

3. Between corporal punishment and defence of necessity

4. reporting offences against minors: duties and conflicts

5. Privacy and surveillance in schools: CCTV, web sexual harassment, wiretaps and blasphemy on social media

6. Tuition in public education and its affect on the right to educational equality

Grading Scheme :
Essay / Project / Final Assignment / Home Exam / Referat 100 %

Additional information:
2 short, online Moodle exercises (obligatory but non-graded) during the semester.
Concluding task: podcast submission, analyzing a legal issue under the course's subjects + written responses to colleagues' podcasts. Exercise submission is a prior condition to the concluding task.
