Course/Module description:
The course will introduce you to the fundamental concepts and techniques in semantics and pragmatics. We will develop a formal theory while carefully studying selected phenomena in natural language (English and other languages). Some of the big questions that we will tackle pertain to the relation between natural language and logic, to the division of labor between semantics and pragmatics, to issues of compositionality, to how intonation may affect meaning, and to how we should model belief and desire. You will learn that semantics (and pragmatics) are vibrant fields in linguistics, with great relevance for, and many connections to, various other fields (philosophy, psychology, computer science, etc).
