Course/Module description:
The profusion of identities and cultures in Israeli society may be a source of social wealth but also leads to tensions and divisions. Among the goals of education in Israel, an important one for nurturing civic-minded future citizens is to promote coexistence and prevent racism. In recent years, growing social divisions have sometimes generated violent manifestations of hostility between various groups. These trends pose challenges and dilemmas for us as educators. Students in this course will learn about the various challenges and opportunities in promoting education for coexistence and preventing racism. Class discussions will address pedagogical and values-related dilemmas and expose students to the unique perspective of social psychology in this context, introducing tools and practices for classroom application. Students will benefit from the mix of knowledge and practices from the content worlds of social psychology and intergroup relations, together with workshop experience and the chance to acquire useful tools designed for the classroom teacher.
