Course/Module description:
“Israel Education” is a fundamental part of both formal and informal Jewish education in the US. It began with the Zionist attempt to establish Israel not only as a national homeland but also as an ethnoreligious center, continued with the confusion between Jewish identity and Israeli identity, and since the 1980s it has also given rise to many tensions anchored in the widening social, cultural and religious gaps between Israel and the Diaspora.
The course is divided into two parts - in the first part we will get to know the basic characteristics of the Jewish-American society with an emphasis on Israel's place in the educational ethos; In the second part, we will focus on three case studies: Israel's place in Hebrew Day Schools, short-term tourist educational programs (chiefly Taglit), and Israel's place on American campuses with an emphasis on the growth of Israel Studies as an academic field. The study of each of the test cases will be based on a combination of preliminary reading of literature and an interview with a field person who will shed light on the field in which he works.

Course/Module aims:
(1) To understand Israel's place in the Jewish-American education system.
(2) To analyze a central aspect of Israel-Diaspora relations in the last seven decades.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
(1) To analyze the image of Israel in three major American-Jewish educational arenas: day schools, educational tourism programs and the centers for Israel Studies at American universities.
(2) To carry out integrative learning that combines interviews of educators and reading theoretical material.
