Course/Module description:
This course will deal with the connections between theory and practice in the field of education. We will first ask about the contribution that theoretical perspectives may have. We will then examine three master-theories in education: positivism, constructivism and critical pedagogy. We will critically read empirical studies situated as part of these theories. Ultimately, we will ask what is the contribution of such a theoretical point of view to those dealing with teaching, education and research.

Course/Module aims:
The central goal of this course is to offer students an opportunity to think about issues of education from a theoretical point of view. In the first part of the course we will discuss the importance of such a theoretical point of view and reflect on three grand-theories. In the second part of the course students will be asked to conduct a theoretical analysis of a case study. Finally, we will ask about the ways in which data from the field may influence new theories.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Understand the importance of theoretical thinking in the field of education.
2.To conduct an intelligent theoretical analysis of a case study using tools of qualitative research.
3. Self reflect on theories relevant to them.
