Course/Module description:
In this course the basic concepts of semantics will be addressed while constantly highlighting the usefulness in understanding these semantic principles when teaching a foreign language. In addition, we will deal with the monolingual Hebrew dictionaries and the thesaurus, and discuss their different natures in light of the semantic principles learned.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Define basic terms in semantics.
2. Understand how to arrive at a more nuanced understanding of the meaning words. and more generally -
3. To take into account the various semantic aspects when dealing with the meaning of words.
4. Utilize fully the information contained in the monolingual Hebrew dictionaries.
5. Distill from the theory tools that will be of benefit when teaching Hebrew.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: distance learning

Course/Module Content:
Synchronic and diachronic research, signified and signifier, structual linguistics, reference and implication, paradigmatic and syntagmatic approaches, synonyms, antonyms, homonymy, polysemy, metonymy, metaphor, connotation and denotation,folk etymology, collocation, pragmatics,Hebrew dictionaries.
