Course/Module description:
Studies in basic trends of the Jewish nationalist ideology, with a special focus on the local cultural contexts of its development in the Fin-de-Siècle Eastern and Central Europe. The particular emphasis will be laid on the place of the concept of Diaspora within the framework of the national vision(s) by central Zionist thinkers.
Course/Module aims:
The seminar is meant to introduce students to the ideological and cultural dimensions of modern Jewish nationalism and its updated scholarly research in light of the beginning and the making of the non-Jewish modern nationalisms of Eastern and East-Central Europe. It is also meant to provide students with the tools to independently deal with the scholarly topics of their choice.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Distinguish between retrospective prism of the national historiographies on their national pasts and the actual developments of the national movements under discussion in the historical context of their birth and making; master theoretical scholarship on nationalism and analyze in its light the social, ideological, political and cultural aspects of the making of modern Jewish nationalism; conduct comparative studies of modern Jewish nationalism and modern national movements of non-Jews; elaborate on the dimensions of continuity and change in the Jewish collective consciousness from the proto-national age to the age of the modern Jewish nationalism and Zionism; critically analyze socio-cultural and socio-political aspects of the canonical texts of modern Zionism in their contemporary contexts.

"Zion" and "Diaspora", "People" and "Land", "Ethnic" and "Civic" - definitions and concepts; "theories of nationalism" and research on Jewish nationalism; Miroslav Hroch and the study of the national movements of non-dominant nationalities; modern Jewish nationalism and the Fin-de-Siècle multinational Empires; sovereignty, Diaspora and identity in the perceptions of Pinsker, Herzl and Ahad Ha'am; Dubnov and Zionism; Israel Zangwill, the "melting pot" and Zionism; "Poalei Tsiyon", Ben-Gurion and Ben-Zvi - the Ottoman period; autonomy, federation and multinational state as perceived by Jabotinsky
