Course/Module description:
The crisis in the kibbutzim during the first years of Israeli statehood examined through scholarly studies and a few primary sources. It examines ideological, partisan, economic, social and cultural facets.

Course/Module aims:
The course aims to present both the main features of the Kibbutz after the founding of the Israeli state (history), and the contemporary research of this topic (historiography).

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Learn to recognize the main features of 1950s Kibbutzim and explain them. They will be able to criticize current studies on the topic, and in the final paper will trace and interpret a primary source from a kibbutz archive.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The seminar is conducted as a round-table discussion, in which all students present their conclusions of the weekly reading. At the end of the year a short final paper will be submitted, based on an archival document.
