Course/Module description:
become familiar with the collection of Kinder- und Hausmärchen of the Grimm brothers as works of literature
Course/Module aims:
read the texts in the original German,
look into how they emerged
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
read the texts on several levels of understanding,
assess them in different frameworks
(mainly literary and historical)

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
We are going to focus on a certain text each time, apply close reading, compare between versions, draw conclusions;
every participant will receive a task for preparing each following session;
course materials provided via Moodle,
most texts accessible through the web
Course/Module Content:
smash the 'myth' of oral transmission:
How did the Grimms process their raw materials? as for narrative and for wording (work on techniques as well as underlying criteria)
adapt a structural access (Vl. Propp) for the sake of description and comparison
differentiate between different types of tales according to motives, genres etc.
get aquainted with and apply different ways of reading the tales: historical/literal, psychological (Bettelheim vs. Jung)

at least half of the total 200 KHM
preceeding and/or following versions for certain texts

selected articles from Encyclopädie des Märchens and other handbooks (central library, Y 4)
