Course/Module description:
This introductory course to Spanish literature and culture will be dedicated to some of the central works of the Spanish canon between the mid-sixteenth century and the present day.

Course/Module aims:
The course aims to provide a wide and profound perspective on some of the Spanish masterpieces from the 16th century to the present day. The course will follow the evolution of the literary trends popular in those times while expounding core concepts of Hispanic literature and culture. In addition to textual analysis of, and discussion on, the characteristics of the literary trends, we will explore epistemological problems and historical and cultural notions reflected in the texts.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Students will identify key topics in the masterpieces studied in class, and examine the different modes in which these topics are represented vis à vis the historical and cultural context of each work. Students will be able to define key concepts related to Spanish literature and culture.

- The Spanish Golden Age Literature: Cervantes and the Picaresque Novel.
- Romanticism.
- Realism.
- 20-21th Century.
- The movies of Pedro Almodóvar
