Course/Module description:
An introduction to some major diachronic and synchronic sociolinguistic issues within the study of the languages spoken in Spain, Portugal and the nations that emerged as a result of the independence of their colonies in America and Africa.
Course/Module aims:
• Enable students to relate essential factors, organize information, and reconstruct knowledge about Ibero-Romance languages, their importance and value in the regional and global contexts.
• Provide students with basic concepts to understand the functioning of languages in general and of Spanish and Portuguese in particular.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Display basic knowledge of the methodology in the study of languages, especially the external history of the Ibero-Romance languages.
• Explain the ways in which different dialects of spoken Latin arose in a Romanized and Christianized cultural space, developed and consolidated into regional or national languages in the Iberian Peninsula, and from the 16th century were exported to America and Africa as a result of the conquest and colonisation of territories outside the old continent.
• Relate all kinds of factors involved in creating these linguistic and cultural spaces.
• Show proficiency in using the main sociolinguistic terms explained throughout the semester.
• Communicate all of the above in an end-of-year written exam.

Lectures, screenings, readings, discussions, exercises, short presentations, final take-home.
Course/Module Content:
The course is divided into two blocks:
1. Current situation
• Languages spoken in Spain and Portugal
• The Spanish in America and the rest of the world
• Portuguese in Portugal, Brazil, Africa and the rest of the world
• The international economic value of Spanish and Portuguese in the era of globalization
2. External history of Spanish and Portuguese
• Formation of the languages of the Iberian Peninsula
• Expansion of Spanish in America and the rest of the world
• Expansion of Portuguese in America and Africa
Each class will be completed by learning the appropriate terminology depending on the topic.
Required Reading:
Reading will be given at the beginning of the semester.
Works not in the library may be obtained from the course coordinator.
