Course/Module description:
This seminar will examine some of the most relevant moments, as well as the groups at the center of LA MOVIDA, a new youth subculture that emerged in the context of the free space created in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain, thanks to the demise of Franco`s dictatorship (1975). The seminar will focus on the social and artistic renewal that this subculture brought with it, and its influence and impact on the process of the liberalization of Spanish society. It will combine an examination of the artistic-cultural and historical contexts in which this movement developed with a close analysis of a selection of songs, comics, literary works, pictures, films, etc. by specific artists.

Course/Module aims:
Enable students to conduct critical analysis of unconventional cultural movements and their impact on behavior changes in society.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Illustrate the importance of the historical context in the cultural development of LA MOVIDA.
• Discuss the cultural and artistic trends in the period studied.
• Recognize the characteristics and style of individual artists.
• Analyze specific works in light of general knowledge of areas such as history, cultural studies, pop-music, literature, sociology or sociolinguistics.
• Relate the social attitudes and behavior patterns of the stars of LA MOVIDA to the new habits and customs of the Spanish society.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures, film and documentary screenings, music-listening, debate, reading, class presentations, final paper.

Each student should present one topic.

Course/Module Content:
The period in which Spain moves from being under the dictatorship of General Franco to be governed by constitutional laws which guarantee the social and democratic state (1973-1986) is known as the "Spanish transition". Especially after the dictator's death (1975), deep social and cultural transformations that forced political change in Spain and its opening outwards, began to take place. This openness was especially evident in the cultural life. Ignored by the media and political and economic classes, in 1977, a group of young people from Madrid seized the moment's opportunity and its creative atmosphere in order to revolutionize the artistic and social mores, leading to what later would be called the Movida-a new youth subculture, whose identity will be comprised of the rejection of ideology and political activism, living the hedonistic lifestyle in favor of sexuality, music, the street, the consumer society and the cult of esthetics, with a discourse addressed to disenchanted youth.
Within the framework of this seminar we will discuss this free space created in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain, thanks to the demise of Franco`s dictatorship. The focus of the seminar will be the social and artistic renewal that the Movida brought with (the change, and the cultural and ideological liberation, which spread across the Spanish society, giving rise to the adoption of new attitudes and new ways of behavior), viewed through its cultural manifestations, and through its protagonists (from the films by Pedro Almodóvar to the music of Alaska y los Pegamoides, Almodóvar y McNamara, Nacha Pop, Radio Futura, Semen up, Os Resentidos, Orquesta Mondragón, etc., or comics as Madriz, La Luna de Madrid or El Víbora.
