Course/Module description:
This Seminar course will involve reading in Greek (and Latin) of classic katabatic (descent) passages from homer and plato (and vergil), as well as discussions of the phenomenon of katabasis with reference to its literary, metaphysical, religious and other aspects.
some attention will be given to the apocalypse of peter, and to the later afterlife of descent texts.
important emphases will be placed on the design of this motif and the transmission of its elements in the passage from one author, genre, language, and culture to another.
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. familiarity with the loci classici in their orignal languages and textual formats
2. deep reading and hermeneutic skills
3. familiarity with a wide range of secondary sources on katabasis and on the specific texts read and discussed
4. skills for academic discussion, oral and written presentation
5. formulate a research question and conduct research
6. improved academic writing.
