Course/Module description:
We will read a selection of early Greek lyric poetry (7th to 4th cent. BCE). We will learn about the genres, metres, dialects and conventions. We will also look briefly at the lives and work of the various poets, as well as at the various occasions of performance.
Course/Module aims:
to develop skills for the reading of archaic Greek poetry in the original, with consideration of the different genres, metres and dialects.
to become acquainted with the central issues involved in the research of archaic Greek poetry.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
translate further Greek poetry with the aid of dictionaries and commentaries, taking into account the genre, metre and dialects of the poems.
Identify the main themes of Greek lyric poetry.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction:
Discussion based on close reading of texts the students are required to read, translate scan and analyze before each lesson.
