Course/Module description:
An introductory course in reading Latin prose in the original. Close reading from Livy's "ab urbe condita", book 1, will be used to introduce students to Latin historiographical prose.

Course/Module aims:
• To develop skills for reading texts of Roman prose in their original language, with the aid of dictionaries, grammar books and commentaries
• to acquire basic abilities in reading an apparatus criticus and understanding the basic issues involved in editing ancient texts
• to identify features of style.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• To read Roman prose independently, with the aid of dictionaries and commentaries.
• To explain linguistic features common in Roman prose
• To use an apparatus criticus and analyze variae lectiones
• To independently tackle other passages of Roman prose, with the aid of reference tools and the reading skills acquired in the course

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Teaching based on close reading of texts the students are required to read, translate and analyze before each lesson.
