Course/Module description:
An introductory course in reading Roman poetry in the original. A close reading of a selection from Ovid’s Metamorphoses will be used to introduce students to Latin poetic language and the basics of metre, and to delineate Ovid’s poetic work and its place in the history of Roman poetry

Course/Module aims:
• to instruct students in reading Latin poetry in the original
• to instruct students in reading classical texts with an apparatus criticus and understanding the considerations employed in editing the text
• to present poetic characteristics of Roman poetry in general, and of Ovid in particular
• to present the characteristics of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and their relation to Roman and Hellenistic poetic traditions

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

• to translate Latin poetry into Hebrew prose
• to use a modern commentary
• to analyze prosody, scan Dactylic Hexameter and recognize special metrical phenomena
• to use an apparatus criticus and explain the editor’ decision between variae lectiones
• to assess and interpret poetic diction, figurative language, and the structure of verses, episodes and the whole poem
• to compare and contrast the mythical material in ov. met with the same mythical topic in other poets and media.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Teaching based on close reading of texts the students are required to read, translate and analyze before each lesson

Course/Module Content:
• Morphological and syntactical characteristics of Latin poetic diction, and of epic language in particular
• The transmission of Ovid’s works
• The structure of the Metamorphoses, its books and episodes
• The Metamorphoses and the tradition of Greek and Roman poetry
• Poetic techniques:
o metre, sound and word order
o Figurative language, symbolism
o intertextuality
• Narrative techniques
• Philosophy, cosmology, theology and aesthetics of the phenomenon of change
• varied treatments of myth

Required Reading:
Introductory articles.

A selection of Myths, after consultation with the students' preferences. At least one of the following will be included:
1. From the Orpheus Myth in Ovid's Metamorphoses book Ten (1-298; 503-559; 560-730 and 11.1-66 in Latin.
2. The Narcissus myth (including III. 254-510) and the Daedalus myth in Latin
