Course/Module description:
A basic course in Latin for students with no previous knowledge of the language.

Course/Module aims:
The course aims to provide students with knowledge of Latin morphology and syntax, the ability to analyse and translate simple classical Latin texts, as well as with basic vocabulary.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• to classify and identify the principal elements of Latin morphology.
• to identify main syntactical constructions and cope with their translation into the syntax of modern languages.
• to use comprehensive Latin dictionaries.
• to combine the above elements in order to translate sentences and continuous texts of simple classical Latin prose.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Topics will be: explained by the teacher with examples from Latin sentences; applied by the students in class, and in homework. If necessary, problems occurring in the home work will be clarified or fine-tuned in class or individually.

Course/Module Content:
Subject will be taught according to the order of presentation in the booklet “Latin for beginners” edited by Dr. Amiel Vardi.
The exact scope of topics to be taught will be adapted to the progress of the students.

Additional information:
Requirements:
Students may miss only 4 classes without approval throughout the year.
The students are expected to actively participate in the class, including answering the teacher's extempore questions.
The students are to prepare their homework assignments and to submit them every lesson with a maximum of one week delay.
Tests will take place every two weeks or monthly. The students are expected to take them all with no more then one week delay if a test was missed.
The first semester exam is obligatory. A minimum score of 60 is required in order to continue to the second semester.
The minimum grade in the final exam is 60.
