Course/Module description:
Homelessness and Homecoming, was the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, turning from mythology to history, the course aims is to analyze the difference between exile and diaspora, stressing that while the first has taken on a general meaning of the forced relocation of any people away from their homeland and into foreign lands, diaspora once referred exclusively to the repeated scattering of the Jews away from the kingdom of Judea, suggests absence from some center—political or religious or cultural— that, nevertheless, does not connote anything so hauntingly negative. Indeed, it is possible to view diaspora in a positive light. From the diaspora/exile distinction to the concept of identity and otherness in national or transnational context, the course offers controversial and resistant concepts to analysis, presenting them with a wide variety of perspectives and sources, raising a general question about this controversy, about the multiplicity of views, about the nature of human nature, of identity and otherness.
Course/Module aims:
To provide students with an overview of one of the most important and foundational issues in History, Literature, Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology. To develop analytic tools for understanding the relation between exile and diaspora and their deep relation to question related to national building in, and to problems connected to the process of identity/otherness, showing how their interaction is the product socio-historical, religious and political changes.
