Course/Module description:
The course will examine the genre characterics of War and Peace against the background of Leo Tolstoy’s historical, philosophical, social, political and moral ideas of 1850's – 1870's. Special attention will be paid to his narrative and stylistic strategies and his artistic method that led to the formation of the Russian national epic. The discussion will be based on the analysis of the text of War and Peace as well as Tolstoy’s writings of the period and his essays on art and religion. The course will use rich visual background material (operas, several film series etc.). The course will be conducted in Hebrew.

Course/Module aims:
To analyze Tolstoy's literary and historiosophic approaches in War and Peace

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Understand Tolstoy's works against the background of the Russian literature, ideology and philosophy of the period.
2. Explain Tolstoy's approach to historical documents.
3. Compare the development of Tolstoy's poetics with general features of European literary trends.
4. Use theoretical methods and categories for the analysis of Tolstoy's texts.
5. Be able to elucidate Tolstoy's innovations in Russian and world literature.
