Course/Module description:
The course will examine the genre of the novel in Leo Tolstoy’s writings from the 1850's to the 1870's and the formation of his narrative and stylistic strategies. Special attention will be paid to the tension between Tolstoy’s historical, philosophical, social, political and moral ideas and his artistic method. We will concentrate on the Russian national epic “War and Peace” and the novel "Anna Karenina" as a presentation of 19th century Russian social and cultural life against the background of Tolstoy’s previous works, as well as his polemic essays on art and religion. The course will use rich visual background material (operas, several film series etc.). The course will be conducted in Hebrew.
