Course/Module description:
The course will examine the best of Pushkin's poetry, prose and drama against the background of the Romantic Weltanschauung. The main philosophical, ideological and cultural problems of the epoque and their representation in Pushkin's creative oeuvre will be discussed. A close reading of Alexander Pushkin's novel in verse, "Eugene Onegin" and a philosophical story "The Queen of Spades" will lay bare the transition from poetry to prose and the rise of the novel in Russian literature. The course will use rich visual background material (music, art, and cinema). The course will be conducted in Hebrew.
Course/Module aims:
The aim of the course is to study the evolution of Pushkin's creative process against the background of the main European literary trends at the turn of the 18th century and the development of the Russian romantic movement.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• acquire necessary knowledge of the Russian literary evolution in the first half of the 19th century
• equip students with the theoretical methods and categories for the analysis of Pushkin's texts
• enrich the students' knowledge of the Romantic system of literary genres of the Russian literature of the period
• improve students' analytic abilities as regards Romantic motifs, themes, and codes.
• elucidate Pushkin's innovations in Russian literature versus those introduced by European writers
