Course/Module description:
The course will analyze the best of Dostoevsky's prose through the prism of his stature as one of the great Russian writers and philosophers. We will follow Dostoevsky's creative evolution against the background of the Golden Age of Russian prose, from his early works like “Poor Folk” and “The Double” to the novels "Crime and Punishment", "The Idiot ", " The Possessed" and "The Brothers Karamazov". Dostoevsky’s works deal with events and people fraught with diverse intensions, meanings and embodying often conflicting values. The course will examine these problematic issues against the background of European literature, film and theatre. The course will be conducted in Hebre

Course/Module aims:
To present students with the dialectical connection between Dostoevsky's philosophy and axiology and its realization in his famous works.
To acquaint students with Dostoevsky's genre and art system as a basis of such dialectics according to Bakhtin’s theory (carnival and carnivalesque; the polyphonic novel; the tradition of Socratic dialogue and Menippean satire; chronotope problems, speech forms etc).
To lay bare the problem of Dostoevsky’ creative artistic and philosophic unity as a system of narratives, leitmotivs, symbols and images of heroes.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Discussion of the main features of literary development in Russia during the 1840 – 1880.
Examination of the structural systems of Dostoevsky’s works.
Understanding of the specificity and the ambivalence of Dostoevsky’s ideology, philosophy and axiology.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal lectures, student presentations, analysis of texts and visual images (works of plastic art, recorded fragments from motion pictures, operas and theatrical performances) and class-room discussions.

18.11.2015– Michael Bachtin and his “Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics”.
25.11.2015, 2.12.2015 – The birth of the new hero: “Notes from the Underground”
