Course/Module description:
The course will study a central problem in the development of Russian XIX century literature that of the relationship between literature and folklore. Deep folklore roots are evident in the work of the Russian classic Nikolai Gogol (1809 – 1852) who freely based his stories on the motifs from Russian and Ukrainian folk songs, fairy tales, legends and epic poems. We will examine how Gogol used these rich sources in the context of high literature of the Romanticism. We will study Gogol’s “Ukrainian Stories” and “Petersburg Stories”, his comedies “The Inspector General” and “Marriage” and his epic poem “Dead Souls”. All these texts will be studied against the background of the contemporary Western literature, among others the novels of Laurence Sterne and the stories of E.T.A. Hoffmann. I will use the available rich visual material (painting, theater, and cinema).
Course/Module aims:
The aim of the course is to study the traces of folklore in the works of Nikolai Gogol against the background of the literary evolution towards the Romanticism.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To acquire the necessary knowledge of the Russian literary development in the first half of the 19 century.
2. To enrich the acquaintance with the system of literary genres in Russian literature of the period.
3. To equip themselves with theoretical methods and categories for the analysis of Gogol’s texts.
4. To improve their analytic ability as regards folklore and literature.
5. To be able to compare Gogol’s innovations as the founder of modern Russian prose with those introduced by other European writers of the Enlightenment and Romanticism.
