Course/Module description:
The first written Slavic language and the circumstances of its emergence. The script, elements of grammar, samples of texts.

Course/Module aims:
To acquaint the student with the Old Church Slavonic (hereafter: OCS) written language through the reading and analyzing of a selection of samples of texts from the initial period of writing attested among the Slavs.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The students will be able to read, understand, analyze and translate an OCS text. The will become familiar with the historical circumstances, political and religious, that gave rise to this written language and get a clear picture of the place of OCS among the Slavic languages.

Attendance requirements(%):
Active participation accounts for 20% of evaluation

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: A historical and linguistic review of the language, its emergence, the written sources. Learning to employ the available dictionaries and grammars, followed by sessions of reading, analyzing and translating selected samples of text.

Course/Module Content:
The historical circumstances of the emergence of OCS as part of the process of Christianization of the Slavs in the 9th century.
The two Slavic alphabets: the Glagolitic and the Cyrillic.
The major linguistic traits of OCS in the phonological and morphological domains.
The available dictionaries and grammars and tips for their correct employment.
Reading and analyzing in class (by the students) of text samples of the New Testament (Gospel of Mark) in the "normailzed" version edited by André Vaillant.
