Course/Module description:
The course will survey the evolution of Russian verse, from the beginning of Russian secular literature, which started in the 18th century, to the end of the Soviet period. The course is organized along the development of major themes, forms, genres, and styles of Russian poetry. The analysis of famous Russian poetic text is followed by its well-known Hebrew translation. The course will use rich visual background material (music, art, and cinema).
Course/Module aims:
The aim of the course is to study the history of Russian verse using theoretic concepts of versification, poetic language, poetic plot, and poetic text.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• acquire necessary knowledge of the historical evolution of Russian poetry of the 18th – 20th centuries
• improve students' analytic abilities as regards rhythm, meter, stanza, poetic language etc.
• enrich students' knowledge of the system of poetic genres of Russian poetry
• discuss aspects of Russian versification considering the connection between form and meaning
• equip students with the theoretical methods and categories necessary for modern analysis of poetic text
