Course/Module description:
The course will examine basic topics in the history of Kievan and Muscovite Russia from the ninth century to the end of the 17th century: Novgorod and the foundation of Kiev on the trade route "from the Variagians to the Greeks", the prince and his band of warriors, Christianisation, city-states and "prince's towns", agriculture and hunting and gathering, rise of principalities of Vladimir and Suzdal before the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, rise of Moscow under the Mongol rule, unification of Russian lands under the Muscovite rule, Russia as the "Third Rome", enserfment of peasants, the rise of autocracy.

To provide to the student some basic knowledge on Russian history to the beginning of the 17th century.
