Course/Module description:
The course will deal with the theoretical and practical aspects of normative Hebrew.
Theoretical aspect -
* What is normativism and what are its motives?
* The crystallization of the norm in modern Hebrew. What are the principles that operated according to the language prescriptivists? Were they aware of the principles?
* The different approaches: purism, permissiveness, and intermediate approaches.
* The works of the prescriptivists such as Epstein, Klausner, Avineri, Peretz, Bendavid, Ben-Haim, Goshen-Gotttstein.
* Work of the Language Committee and the Hebrew Language Academy.
Registers and sociolects.
The practical aspect -
Word order; The relative clause; Attitude towards influence of foreign languages, loan translations in particular; Pronunciation and morphology; Punctuation; Spelling

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Distinguish between the different approaches to normativism
* Avoid automatic corrections as much as possible
* Employ a balanced judgment in editing and correcting texts
