Course/Module description:
In this course we take a linguistic approach to discourse analysis, studying language elements which are dependent on the relation of a sentence to its textual context. Basic concepts in discourse analysis will be applied to phenomena in modern and Biblical Hebrew.

Course/Module aims:
To impart to the students an understanding of basic concepts in discourse analysis and the scientific literature on the discourse analysis of Hebrew

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Identify the coherence relation between a sentence and its context
2. Understand the principles governing the kind of expressions used to refer to participants in a text
3. Understand the principles of information structure and their influence on word order in the sentence
4. Understand the role of argumentation and rhetoric in structuring sentences in texts
