Course/Module description:
A complete description of any language includes grammar and vocabulary. A utensil that describes the vocabulary is the dictionary. This seminar will discuss basic concepts of lexicography, including "word" and entry, synchronic and diachronic dictionaries, mono-lingual and multi-lingual, the linguistic corpus of the dictionary, the structure of the dictionary, the entry structure, the definition and its language, the linguistic apparatus: etymology, grammar, usage and sources, the value and status of images in the dictionary, semantics and lexicography, the historical importance dictionary for the documentation of language; Emphasis will be placed on the milestones in the history of Hebrew lexicography from its beginning until today, and issues like: Commentaries and glossaries versus dictionaries; anagrammatic dictionaries; linguistic theories and lexicography; grammatical and semantic dictionaries; problems arising from the translation of bilingual dictionaries into mono-lingual; modern dictionaries; the historical Dictionary of the Academy of Hebrew language. The discussions will be accompanied by reading samples from the sources

Course/Module aims:
Learn an important chapter in linguistics and its history
Study a chapter of the history of the Hebrew lexicography with regard to its relations to the Hebrew sources on the one hand and to Arabic lexicology on the other
Reveal the deep structures of dictionaries
To examine the dependence of late dictionaries on the former ones
Learn about the method of the composition of dictionaries from the end of the tenth century CE to the present

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Knowledge of the field and its problematics
Knowledge of the primary and secondary literature of Hebrew lexicography
Knowledge of the Infrastructures for the study of Hebrew vocabulary
