Course/Module description:
Why might the word mazkira ‘secretary’ sound like maskira ‘renting’, or madhim ‘amazing’ like madim ‘uniform’? What explains the widespread use of yavo ‘I will come’ instead of the standard avo ‘I will come’? And why does the plural form of tik ‘bag’ exhibit ultimate stress (tikim), while the plural form of tik ‘tick’ is stressed on the penultimate syllable (tikim)? These and other questions are addressed by phonetics and phonology, branches of linguistics that study the physical and acoustic aspects of sound production (phonetics) as well as the sound systems of specific languages, the changes these systems undergo and the reasons behind such changes (phonology). Throughout the course, we will acquire theoretical tools to understand the sound systems of various world languages and apply them to analyze phenomena and processes characterizing the phonological system of Modern Hebrew. By the end, we will gain a deeper understanding of the current phonological structure of Modern Hebrew.
