Course/Module description:
The purpose of this course is to show the typical changes that took place in the shift from Biblical Hebrew into Mishnaic Hebrew in the domain of the lexicon, i.e., semantic and lexical changes. For this, selected words, which can demonstate typical changes, will be throughly examined. One of the main goals is to show the impact of general changes in phonology, morphology and syntax on lexical items.

To get to know typical changes in the lexicon that took place in the shift from Biblical into Mishnaic Hebrew.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To be able to analyze the semantic components of a word and to know how to identify and analyze diachronic changes.

1. Introduction
Biblical and Mishnaic Hebrew
The History of the Hebrew lexicography
2. Typical lexicological changes in the shift from Biblical into Mishnaic Hebrew
Influence of Aramaic:
An Aramaic word penetrates in Hebrew
The Hebrew component disappears
The Aramaic component disappears
The Biblical word gains a holy or Halachic meaning
Grammatical components lose their function
3. Analyzing specific words
The semantic componts and changes in the shift between the periods

Preparation of the words which will be discussed according to the dictionaries and concordances.
