Course/Module description:
The course offers an introduction to Modern Standard Arabic in comparison to Hebrew. The course deals with the basic phonology, morphology and syntax of Modern Standard Arabic. Reading short texts will be combined as well.
The course is intended for students with no prior knowledge of Arabic.
Course/Module aims:
- Acquiring basic proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic
- Introduction to the basic grammar of Arabic
- Deepening the understanding of Hebrew grammar by comparing it to Arabic
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Read and write in Arabic
- Understand basic texts in Modern Standard Arabic and analyze them grammatically
- Compare between Arabic and Hebrew
- Use online dictionaries (Arabic-Hebrew and Arabic-English)

Phonology:
- Consonant and vowel shifts between Hebrew, Arabic and Proto-Semitic
- Consonant Clusters
- Stress
Morphology:
- Definite article
- Demonstrative pronouns
- Feminine form
- Suffix -iyy (yāˀ ˀannisba)
- Independent and suffixed pronouns
- Plural: masculine, feminine, broken
- Dual: nouns, verbs, pronouns (basic introduction)
- Comparative and superlative forms
- Introduction to the verb system of Arabic
- Verb Form I (strong) – all conjugations (including participles and imperative)
- Verbal moods and their uses
- Weak verbs (optional)
- Passive verbs (optional)
- Numbers (optional)
Syntax:
- Cases: ˀiˁrāb of definite and indefinite nouns
- Word order and agreement
- Relative Clauses
- Real conditionals (optional)
Use of online dictionaries:
- Arabic-Hebrew and Arabic-English
