Course/Module description:
Jesus probably referred to himself as "The Son of Man", in Aramaic "Bar Nash". The meaning of this phrase might indicate that Jesus thought of himself as a human amongst other human beings, while implying the image mentioned in Daniel (7, 13). The Gospels hint that Jesus is the "Bar Nash" mentioned in Daniel, among other Biblical characters e.g. Moses. In addition the Christian corpus depicts Jesus via Messianic terminologies typical to Jewish groups during the first century.
Jesus is also mentioned in Jewish sources and in The Quran. As expected Jesus is depicted in these sources in a different way than in the Christian sources, which were written by his disciples, who saw him as their teacher and as the Messiah.
In the seminar we will discuss literary image of Jesus in the Gospels. Likewise, we will discuss the variety of Jesus's names as they appear in The New Testament. We will also discuss the portrait of Jesus in The Quran and the Jewish sources. The seminar will include instructional tour of sites and encounters with Clergymen and scholars who study the usage of the imagery of Jesus in Christianity, Judaism and in the Islam.
Course/Module aims:
In the seminar we will project the image of Jesus through the prism of the different Holy Scriptures: The New Testament, The Quran and the Jewish holy texts. In this way we will uncover the hybridity of Jesus, as revealed by the different texts.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
The seminar will provide the student with tools, enabling him to analyze and criticize parallel religious texts that deal with the image of Jesus from different points of view. The student will be able to use these tools in order to create his own objective perspective about the image of Jesus.
