Course/Module description:
The seminar will deal with Egyptian gods whose worship went beyond the borders of Egypt in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, such as Isis and Osiris, as well as syncretistic gods such as Serapis, Hermes Trismegistus, Imhotep/Asclepius. The course will deal with the cultural/religious contact between Egypt and the Hellenistic world and later between Egypt and the Roman world.
Course/Module aims:
To learn about the encounter between the gods of Egypt and the cultures of the Hellenistic and Roman worlds.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Ito be able to identify the Egyptian gods outside of Egypt.
To point to sources from which we learn about Egyptian gods outside of Egypt.
To be able to recognize fused divine entities.
To examine fusion mechanisms between Egyptian gods and gods outside of Egypt in the Hellenistic period and in the Roman period.
