Course/Module description:
Sabbtianism – the largest messianic movement in Jewish history – made a significant impact on early modern and modern Jewish world. In this course we will explore the history of the Sabbataian movement – with its many branches and off-shoots from the 17th to the 20th centuries – through various scholarly prisms, which shaped the discourse on Sabbatianism from its beginning till today. Among these are: Jewish mysticism, Jewish social history, the study of early modern Europe, the history of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, and interfaith encounters between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We will read and analyze texts written about Sabbtianism, Sabbatians, and their writings, while focusing of the manners these were interpreted and represented in different disciplines, and will explore how they reflect spirits of times and scholarly processes.

Course/Module aims:

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Develop critical reading of scholarly texts.
2. Identify various scholarly standpoints and compare them.
3. Describe processes of production of historical knowledge by employing an integrative approach.
