Course/Module description:
This course will introduce students to the history of Islam in Southeast Asia.It includes a historical survey, discussion of local Islamic traditions and an exploration of a range of disciplinary appraoches to the study of Islam in this part of the world.

Course/Module aims:
Attaining familiarity with the basic outline of Islam's history in Southeast Asia, with a sample of local Islamic traditions and with the ways Southeast Asian Islam has been studied by scholars from a range of academic disciplines.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Possess basic knowledge of Islam's history in Southeast Asia
2. Be familiar with several local Islamic traditions (ritual, literary, historical)
3. Understand how different academic disciplines have approached the study of Islam in Southeast Asia

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lecture and discussion

Course/Module Content:
The expansion of Islam into Southeast Asia including part of this list:
Islam in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines
Local traditions of Islamization
Sharia, gender and family, relations between Muslims and non-Muslims
Disciplinary perspectives on the study of Islam in the region: history, anthropology, cultural studies

Grading Scheme :
Essay / Project / Final Assignment / Referat 40 %
Submission assignments during the semester: Exercises / Essays / Audits / Reports / Forum / Simulation / others 50 %
Attendance / Participation in Field Excursion 10 %

Take home exam.
Students will submit one assignment and one reading report
