Course/Module description:
This course will introduce students to the history of Islam in Southeast Asia, with a focus on Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand.It includes a historical survey, discussion of local Islamic traditions and an exploration of a range of disciplinary appraoches to the study of Islam in this part of the world.
Course/Module aims:
Attaining familiarity with the basic outline of Islam's history in Southeast Asia, with a sample of local Islamic traditions and with the ways Southeast Asian Islam has been studied by scholars from a range of academic disciplines.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Possess basic knowledge of Islam's history in Southeast Asia
2. Be familiar with several local Islamic traditions (ritual, literary, historical)
3. Understand how different academic disciplines have approached the study of Islam in Southeast Asia
