Course/Module description:
This course is about understanding jazz harmony, focusing on musical analysis of Tin-Pan Alley songs. It is an advanced course that requires knowledge of tonal harmony including chromaticism.

Course/Module aims:
The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with the harmonic language of jazz music with its unique features.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
On successful completion of this module, students should be familiar with the harmonic syntax of jazz and the unique use of dissonance in the genre. They should be able to analyze jazz songs and improve their understanding of chromatic harmonic progressions in other genres.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Live lecture, live examples on the piano, active listening to music, in-class and home writing assignments.

Course/Module Content:
Diatonic seventh chords in major and minor, triads with added 6, suspended chords, jazz chord symbols, the governing cadence 2-5-1, guiding tones, added dissonances on top of seventh chords (tensions), secondary dominants, diminished chords, related II, mixture, subV7 chords, blues, jazz scales and modal jazz.

Excerpts of different methodical books will be available in the moodle of the course.
