Course/Module description:
The course deals with Christian liturgy in the medieval church in general, and its musical and political dimensions in particular. We will mainly deal with new rituals that were added to the Christian calendar in the 13th and 14th centuries, and we will examine the new against the background of the established and the old. Why was there a need to add ceremonies to an already busy calendar? What role did miracles play in this? What were some of the strategies behind the composition of new rituals? How was the music composed? What is the source of the text? How were these new rituals understood by the communities for which they were devised?
