Course/Module description:
The course deals with Christian liturgy in the medieval church in general, and its musical and political dimensions in particular. We will mainly deal with new rituals that were added to the Christian calendar in the 13th and 14th centuries, and we will examine the new against the background of the established and the old. Why was there a need to add ceremonies to an already busy calendar? What role did miracles play in this? What were some of the strategies behind the composition of new rituals? How was the music composed? What is the source of the text? How were these new rituals understood by the communities for which they were devised?

Course/Module aims:
The course aims to develop a set of skills (analysis, evaluation, listening) necessary to understanding the historical processes that brought to the composition of new liturgical feasts in the medieval church.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
By the end of the seminar, students are expected to develop a set of skills (analysis, evaluation, listening) in relation to a variety of liturgical contexts in the Middle Ages.

Required Reading:
Reading materials for the seminar comprise recent scholarly literature on relevant case studies. The course's Moodle web-site includes more precise and updated information. Those interested to know more ahead of the course are welcome to contact the instructor.
