Course/Module description:
The king’s principal wife - the queen, and the mother of the king - the queen-mother, were identified with important goddesses and carried religious and ceremonial duties. As such, they often gained power and influenced Egyptian political life. Ancient Egyptian princesses also played an important part in religion and politics and are often portrayed with their parents. In this course, using archaeology, texts (in translation), and art, we shall investigate the matters at stake, focusing on the religious and political role of royal women while looking at select historical issues.
Course/Module aims:
To introduce the students with less familiar aspects of Egyptian history, those that are examined through female figures with a unique status, women who, on the one hand lived in the shadow of their husband, and on the other hand were influential and led moves.
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Identify the different periods in Egyptian history.
To examine the status and work of royal women.
Name key female figures in the Egyptian royal family.
To get to know the female kings, and the unique circumstances that led to their reign.
Learn about the unique role of the royal women in preserving the dynasty.
