Course/Module description:
The status of royal women in Ancient Egypt was a result of the perception of the royal family as a divine family and from bearing the god-king and giving birth to him. In certain times during the long history of Egypt, royal women had significant political power, some of them even ruled Egypt as kings. In the course, we will study about the queen, the queen-mother, and the princesses. We will focus on key figures such as Khenet-kaues, Hatshepesut, Nefertiti, Nefertari, Cleopatra, and others.

Course/Module aims:
To recognise the part royal women took in the long history of Ancient Egypt, to understand the source of their power, to appreciate the moves they had to do in order to gain power and in order to influence historical events.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To be acquainted with the myths consolidating the status of the queen
To understand the role of royal women in preserving the dynasty
To name the royal women who held great political power, especially those who ruled Egypt as kings
To learn about historical, artistic and other sources concerning royal women
To identify royal women in Ancient Egyptian art
