Course/Module description:
The course will tell the story of nearly 400 years of Egyptian rule over Canaan, between the 15th century BCE and the 11th Century BCE. It will focus on the Egyptian motivation to establish an empire, on Egyptian presence in Canaan, on administrative mechanism and military ones which maintained the empire. We will learn about the Amarna Archive, about Egyptian administrative centres in Canaan, about Egyptian gods in Canaan, and Canaanite gods in Egypt. Moreover, the course will discuss the Egyptianization of Canaanite aristocracy, and inter-cultural influence. Material finds and textual evidence from Egypt and from the Levant will be used to explore these topics.

Course/Module aims:
To tell the story of the Egyptian empire and particularly the rule over Canaan, through archaeology and textual evidence from Egypt and from the Levant.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To be acquainted with the geopolitical situation in Egypt and in the Levant in the relevant time
To know archaeological objects which testify to Egyptian presence in Canaan
To be familiar with Egyptian administrative centres in Canaan
To identify archaeological finds and textual evidence which mark the chain of events
To recognise elements which point at Canaanite influence on Egypt
