Readings in translation of medieval Judeo-Arabic exegesis, alongside relevant secondary literature.
Course/Module aims:
Introduction to exegesis in Judeo-Arabic
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Gain familiarity with the historical cultural and religious background of Judeo-Arabic literature as a whole
2. Develop tools for analyzing exegetical problems in the Bible
3. Identify how exegetes deal with and solve exegetical problems
4. Compare between exegetes and the solutions they propose
5. Explain and generalize the primary elements of medieval Judeo-Arabic Bible exegesis

Subjects including the rise of Judeo-Arabic Bible exegesis, the Karaite community of Jerusalem, key intellectual figures of the 9th-11th centuries, etc.
