Course/Module description:
Introduction to the classical, medieval Jewish exegetical tradition: Rashi, Rashbam, Abraham ibn Ezra, Radak.

Course/Module aims:
To study the exegetical methodologies of the medieval Jewish exegetes, their attitude to Midrashic exegesis that preceded them, and the impact of historical factors upon them.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Familiarity with the classical medieval exegetes; 2. evaluation of their work in light of their hermeneutical principles; 3. appreciation of their decisive influence on the rise of critical exegesis.

Attendance requirements(%):
100%

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Students prepare for class by reading selected bibliography. Handouts with selected source materials will be provided.

Required Reading:
A detailed bibliography will appear on the course website.
Some of the readings have acceptable English equivalents, but the source material must be read in the original.

Grading Scheme :
Written / Oral / Practical Exam 60 %
Submission assignments during the semester: Exercises / Essays / Audits / Reports / Forum / Simulation / others 30 %
