Course/Module description:
The course will examine a wide variety of psalms and collections of Psalms disovered at Qumran. Special attention will be paid to their function and use of the Bible.

Course/Module aims:
1. Study a wide variety of psalms discovered at Qumran with special attention to their function and life-setting.
2. Acquire the skills for reading and understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. To gain familiarity with the corpus of psalms and religious poetry discovered at Qumran and with the scholarly editions of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
2. To analyze the psalms and religious poetry in the Scrolls including their use of the Bible.
3. To distinguish between sectarian compositions and non-sectarian texts.
4. To compare the psalms and religious poetry in the literature of the Second Temple period with later Jewish prayer.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Students will read and explain the text and secondary reading(s) assigned for each class.
For certain topics students will be assigned different readings and each student will report to the class on his/her assigned reading.
The professor will introduce each topic and guide class discussions.
