תאור כללי של הקורס:
התאטרון האמריקאי הממסדי נוטה להתבסס על כתיבה ראליסטית ולדון בבעיות של משפחה, חברה, ערכים וכישלונותיהם. עם התפוררותה של המשפחה הגרעינית המופיעה, למשל, במחזותיהם של אלבי ושפארד, אנו מוצאים גם התפוררות של השפה הבימתית הראליסטית. שיעור זה יתמקד במחזאים האמריקאים הבולטים (והמצליחים, אלה שמחזותיהם הוצגו בברודווי), החל ביוג'ין או'ניל, טנסי וויליאמס, וארתור מילר – השילוש המייסד – ועד לאדוארד אלבי וסאם שפארד. בשיעור נתמקד בקבוצות תאטרון כגון ה"Group Theatre" וה"Federal Theatre" ונדון בקשר בין תאטרון ואידאולוגיה.
מטרות הקורס:
לעמוד על התמות והסגנונות התשתיתיים המאפיינים את היצירות החשובות של התאטרון האמריקאי הנחשב ל"קנוני"; ולספר את סיפור התהוותו של תאטרון אמריקאי במדינה שהחלה ליצור תאטרון משל עצמה רק בתחילת המאה העשרים.

בסיומו של קורס זה, סטודנטים יהיו מסוגלים:
סטודנטיות וסטודנטים יכירו את המחזות והיוצרים החשובים, יוכלו לעמוד על סגנונם, על התמות והאידאולוגיה שלהם, ויבינו את הקשר שבין אלה לבין ערכים חברתיים.
