Course/Module description:
In this seminar, we will focus on the dialogue of Israeli playwrights and directors with the Greek Classical tradition in its two aspects – the play and its performance. First We will read plays by Nissim Aloni, Yaacov Shabtai, Hanoch Levin and Ilan Hatzor and analyze their readings of the Greece classical repertoire, then, we will follow the passage of these plays from page to stage and the reception of the Classical tradition in New theatrical creations by Rina Yerushalmi, Yossi Yizraely, Ilan Ronen and Hanan Snir.

Course/Module aims:
To encourage the students to study and the Classical theatrical tradition and its influence on playwrights and theatre artists in the Israeli theatre

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
To Analyze plays from the classical tradition and research the influences of the classical tradition on the creation of modern theatre traditions.

Attendance requirements(%):
Full and active participation in all the Seminar meetings. 80%

Seminar themes:
A discussion of 'Reception' and its role in the study of theatrical traditions.
A discussion of Aloni plays – The American Princess, Aunt Lisa, The gypsies of Jaffa and Eddy king.
A discussion of Yaacov Shabtai and Ilan Hatzor dialogue with Aristophanes.
A discussion of Levin's dialogue with Euripides in plays such as – The Lost Women of Troy, The Great Whore of Babylon, the dreamer and The Moaners.
A discussion of the transformation of a play from the page to the stage.
An Analysis of Israeli performances which correspond with the Classical tradition such as – Rina Yerushalmi, Mythos, Ilan Ronen, In War as In War, Yossi Yizraely, Ephigenia at Aulis, and Hanan Snir Antigone and Oedipus: a Case study.
